Stream of Consciousness Sunday: ‘Alloween in France

stream-of-consciousness-sundayHere is my 5 minute brain dump as part of this great series. Here goes …

Ok, so not terribly original to talk about Halloween … I’m a real scaredy cat so when it comes to halloween it’s all about pumpkins and bats – no blood and gore thank you.

In a moment of madness I decided to organise a kiddies Halloween party for some other foreigners in my area of France. I then realised I needed costumes and decorations, oh, and a pumpkin.

I should remind people that I am in the South of France.

The first thing I noticed is that it’s not a big deal AT ALL here. The biggest selection of Halloween things I’ve found was one rack of lame witch hats and a few hideous masks. No decorations. Hmmm. And no pumpkins! Well, not the ones you need to carve to make a lantern.

Maybe if I lived in a big city it would be different.

So, I have made BiP’s costume – I found leopard ears and decided to make a pillowcase dress for her out of faux fur .. it’s cute. I made the decorations out of paper and string. It’s ok.

I bought candy in case some kids do decide to ring my bell. I hope they do. It’s just that Halloween really isn’t celebrated here.

Guess the fact that the French can’t say their “H’s” makes it a bit of a non-starter!

Ahhh … the joys of cultural differences!

‘appy ‘alloween from France!

Wish me luck for tomorrow’s party!

I love to hear how things are celebrated elsewhere. I kind of got the feeling that Halloween is a pretty big deal in the U.S. Sounds like that is confirmed. I kind of wish that I rely more on myself to make a costume for Evan. Instead, I happily spent 19.99 for a ninja costume at Target.

I remember being in Montreal for Halloween a few years back and I was mortified at the goryness of the decorations. Corpses hanging from trees, tomb stones etc … they freaked me out. At home we just have a few pumpkins and some paper bats. I guess not having things over commercialised leaves room for a personal touch.
I’d have killed to buy a costume for $19.99 … ‘Appy ‘Alloween!

Ahhh, that sounds so lovely to have Halloween be simple and homemade, not overly commercial like so many other holidays here. ‘Appy ‘Alloween to you in France:-).

Hope you and BiP enjoy the party!

I miss Halloween celebrations and whilst I’m not into the whole “commercial” thing, I think good decorations, dressing up and a party are fun. We had a major party a couple of years ago and I had to buy most of our decorations from the UK and then made the rest ourselves.

I know exactly what you mean about the pumpkins, yesterday I went to three stores and a market to try and get one to carve, NOTHING! It’s a shame as it is an activity I would like to share with my daughter in years to come, I guess I’ll just have to get organised.

I will be putting up a skeleton and tombstone outside the house tonight – I wonder if we’ll get any trick or treaters? Let me know if you get any!

Happy Halloween! I hope the party goes well! DH and I were in Paris in early December a few years ago, and I was so excited to see Christmas lights and decorations in the city. Except that there weren’t any. I’m so used to how we Americans put up our decorations so early that I forgot the rest of the world wasn’t like that LOL.
