Stream of Consciousness Sunday: Country Life

Here is my 5 minute brain dump as part of this great series. Here goes …

This weekend we went up to the middle of France into the foothills of the Alps to visit PigletinFrance and her family.

The scenery changed dramatically as we left Provence and headed north. BiP was delighted, there were not just a few cows, there were hundreds! And to her utter delight there were cows at the bottom of the garden!

BiP enjoyed eating apples off the tree – saying Mmmmm… after every bite. We collected walnuts and looked at a LOT of cows and horses. The landscape was stunning.

It was then that my constant conflict about how I’d like to live came into play. It was so wholesome where we were. The air was clean, fresh fruit plentiful, and I am sure those cows will taste amazing.
I’ve often thought it would be perfect to have a small farm where you could be self sufficient. But, just this weekend we had to consider the dog and the cat. What would you do with a farm? Eat all your animals before a vacation?  Not to mention the work. It’s fine to stroll by and admire someone else’s animals on an afternoon stroll but I’m sure it’s a totally different story when it comes to actually having your own.

I miss living in a big city at the best of times, but I do get this urge to live in the country. Right now I don’t live in either.

Do you ever have conflicting dreams about where you’d like to live?

All the time! Should I live near my family, in the mountains, near the ocean, in the city, in the country, near my work, find new work? These questions are always bouncing around in my head. I consider myself slightly nomadic… so far I’ve never felt really settled anywhere.

Total conflict here. I would love to live downtown, in the city, somewhere that feels grown up and almost seedy… But then with a child, I want to live somewhere safe and suburban. Where I am now is a pretty good blend but it still feels like a compromise a lot of the time.

Do I ever have conflicting dreams about where I’d like to live? All. The. Time. I love the city. But after living in Jeddah, which is not as city-ish as cities can be, I’ve had a longing for green, open spaces and that part of France you’ve mentioned sounds very appealing!

This post is just right for me. I like in a fairly remote area and it’s not my first choice. But it’s not permanent either. My husbands job will move us again and this will be our life. so I’m trying, as best I can, to make the best of each place and discover all the great things about them.

Do I ever?! I usually say my life is a constant striving to find the right balance between people and trees. I love nature and want to be close and connected to it AND I love community and feeling really immersed in a social scene. I have never found anywhere that balanced both perfectly. Where we are now is pretty close. We live in the SF Bay Area, out of the city (aka in the ‘burbs). We are about 25 minutes from the Pacific and about the same distance again from Redwoods. Plus I am (now – since moving, recently) in walking distance from lots of little shops, restaurants and even public transport – which makes me feel like I am in Europe again (but more sunshine than London). So yes, the conflict continues. I am still not as close to nature as I would like (not living on a house on a lake by the mountains) nor as close to my old friends (in Europe) as I would prefer… but here is pretty good, too.

Thanks (again) for the food for thought.

I grew up in the country. I went to college in the city. And now I live happily in the suburbs. But if I had to pick, I’d totally be a city girl. I could never eat my own animals.
