We are on a family holiday to New York and, as you do, we hit the shops! My husband was watching BiP as I went in search of some new, breastfeeding friendly clothes (I’ll save that for another post) when I heard “Ameena, come quick! You HAVE to see this! Now THAT is hardcore Elimination Communication!” “What?” I thought, we are on the 3rd floor of Macy’s in downtown NYC, he was outside the fitting rooms next to Starbucks so what on earth was he talking about?
Amidst the flurry of shop assistants yelling and screaming there was a mother holding her baby over some Starbucks napkins. The baby peed. The grandmother arrived with more napkins and then the baby pooped! The shop assistants screamed “You can’t do that here! That’s disgusting! Call security!” I could not stop laughing. It was hilarious. The mother and the grandmother were ignoring the attention (they were from the Far East and clearly tourists). The grandmother picked up the soiled napkins and headed for the Starbucks bin – another drama ensued!
So, how do you practice Elimination Communication in a department store? Unless you plan to take your baby to the bathroom I suggest you don’t but I guess other’s think otherwise!
Oh my goodness… very interesting!
I wish I could have been there! (very jealous of your NYC trip, too ;))
It was definitely a sight! LOL!
We had an amazing trip! We LOVED NYC!
Wow! That must have been quite a sight!
Oh yeah! LOL!
Not.sure.what.to.say.
But hey, whateva. lol
Can it be? Polish Mama lost for words? You can do better than that! LOL!
I’m sorry, but that’s too much. Are you teaching your kid it’s ok to just go anywhere? I thought EC was supposed to be teaching our kids to associate potty cues with the actual toilet? That’s such a huge health issue to allow them to go on some napkins in a place where people eat?! I saw a gal in our mall use a potted plant once, and was disturbed by that as well.
Poop shouldn’t be thrown away in the garbage because it can turn into a combustable byproduct once in dumps-also not safe. The point is, try to get it in a toilet of some kind. We EC, but I’m not teaching my child that the world is his toilet.
I totally agree! A potted plant? That’s insane. I’m cool with certain places outside of the bathroom like the garden on the gutter in the street for a pee (dogs do it all the time) when needs must but Starbucks or a department store? Uhhh NO!
Very funny post. It’s interesting to see how many people commenting have different point of views. I guess that is what makes effective communication a challenge.
Glad you found this funny. I can assure you it was hysterical to watch!
Oh my 😐 We used to carry a little portable potty around and a couple of times had to use in on the train but we tried to find a spot where there weren’t too many people around – and the potty has little plastic bags with absorbent paper in them so we took the “goods” with us and didn’t leave them in the bin on the train.
